Fall Feeding of Backyard Birds

FALL IS THE TIME TO PUT OUT THE MENU FOR WINTER BIRD FEEDING!

Feeding Birds in the Fall-Ted Steinke Photo

Should I start feeding birds in the fall?

Should I continue to feed birds through the autumn months?

The answer is YES!

At this time of year when the days are growing shorter, birds are scouting their feeding grounds for the upcoming cold months.  You may not see them as frequently at your feeders because of an abundance of harvest in the fields, but they are looking for future feeding stations.

Provide them with plenty of seed and foods, and they will return when pickings are slim elsewhere.

Wild Birds' calorie requirements increase at the same time the food supply decreases.  In winter months, the freeze seals the buds, the insects stop crawling and flying, and flowers and seeds are frozen or beneath snow.  In fall, the birds seek out in advance where they can find other resources.

Those who wait to begin feeding in the cold months will miss out.  Birds who are stressed by cold temperatures and limited food can't afford the energy to search out alternate feeding sources.  If they have already determined that your backyard is a good source in the fall months, they will return, hungry and eager, when it is colder.
