THE AMERICAN GOLDFINCH

The American Goldfinch is one of the most colorful and conspicuous song birds. It is often called the Wild Canary because the male, except for his black forehead, wings and tail, is bright lemon yellow and has such a sweet ecstatic song. It is a bird of the open places and so fond of companionship that, except while nesting, they are usually seen in flocks and, like robins, have little fear of people. The finch is attracted to thistle and will come to a thistle feeder , many times in groups.

Weathering Winter

Crisp mornings, shorter days and the season's first snowflakes undoubtedly indicate winter's imminent arrival. Time to turn on the furnace. But what about our feathered friends? How do they survive the cold?

Nature has given birds one of the best tools?feathers. Birds, like mammals, are warm-blooded, which means they have to maintain a body temperature within a certain range. Thanks to their feathers and the thick covering they provide, most songbirds around our homes have no problem staying warm, even on very cold days. (Think of how warm you stay in your down jacket or while sleeping under your down comforter.)

This winter, you may see some birds fluff up their feathers. There are air spaces between the overlapping feathers. By fluffing their feathers, birds conserve heat within those air spaces. You may also see birds perch, lifting one leg up to the warmth under the breast. And occasionally, birds will tuck their bills into the feathers of the shoulder.

Birds must also eat to maintain warmth. With these cooler days, it may seem that the birds at your feeders are overconsuming. But the fact is they have to eat a lot to stay alive. Compared to humans, birds have a higher metabolism, including faster heart rate, higher blood pressure and faster respiratory system. Birdseed provides nutritious fat and protein, which give birds the energy they need to survive.

Wild birds are generally equiped to survive the winter, but you can help the cause and keep them coming to your area by providing a consistent supply of birdseed in a quality bird feeder, and a functional roosting or nesting box.   In reward, you will be entertained with their amazing winter habits in your own Backyard!
